Are You Guilty Of These Tattoo Mistakes?

Getting a tattoo is a big decision, if you don’t like the design you chose after it has been done then your only options are expensive and painful removal procedures or trying to cover it up somehow. A good artist will be able to cover over your tattoo if you don’t like it, but that is a difficult process and you may not like the result of that either so it is much easier to just choose right the first time.

Here are some tips to help you avoid the most common tattoo problems:

Make sure you know who will be doing the work: We said that choosing a tattoo you like is important, but probably more important is to choose an artist who is going to do a good job of bringing your idea to life. You’ll find that the level of skill between artists varies more than you can imagine, and in fact I don’t think in most places that there are any qualifications someone needs to get before they start.

That is why my ritual now when I want a new tattoo is to buy some magazines on them and have a look through at the artists they talk about in there. You can really get a good idea from the write ups in there about which artists are really skillful and passionate about what they do, and you can see which have won awards etc to help you choose. Ok you are probably going to have to travel to actually get some time with one of those artists, but when the result lasts a lifetime then isn’t it worth a bit of extra effort? It also hurts less if your artist knows what they are doing, so if you are having tattoos on your feet which is supposed to be very painful then you will glad you picked somebody good!

If you have any words in the design triple check them: This kind of mistake is easily avoided yet I see it happening time and time again and it ruins a good tattoo and is not easy to correct. Most of the time it is a lack of planning that causes this, somebody comes up with an idea for some cool words to have tattooed on their body and they just walk in and ask for them to be done. Instead if you take the time to write it out in Microsoft Word and actually print it out (so there aren’t any issues with them not being able to read your handwriting) then it will spell check it for you and after triple checking it is all ok you can print it out and take it along with you.

Think about your future designs: I wish I had received this advice before I started to get tattoos, even though you are really excited about getting your first tattoo and don’t know if you want any more then think about what you need to do if you do want more. Think about what you could have done if you wanted to expand the design you want to get, is it easy to add to and make bigger or will it look out of place? Tattoos are quite addictive and it will look silly if you just get a collection of individual tattoos, the best designs are those that cover a large area and integrate a lot of different designs into them.
