Art Licensing – Is it Selling Out Or Cashing In?

There is a belief among many artists that to be good, you have to be hungry. Or you have to have rings in your nose. Or you have to dress in a very unique way. Or you have to be rebelling against something. Or… fill in the blank.

I believe that I can be creative, an artist, and still pay the rent. Put food on the table. Go on vacation. I choose to license my artwork. It works for me. I am thankful every day that I have a way to cash in on what I love, and earn a nice income.

There are lots of ways to do anything. Let’s step outside of art for a minute.

Say you really love to drive. What could you do to earn a living? Here are a few things that come to mind:

  1. Become a Nascar driver
  2. Drive a School Bus
  3. Teach driver’s education

As you can see, these are very different jobs. But they all involve turning a passion for driving into income. If art is what you love, there are many ways to turn it into money as well. Art licensing is one way.

Does the idea of painting one collection of designs, and licensing the rights appeal to you? You could have several companies sending you royalty checks for using the same art of different products This is how people make money licensing art.

So if you believe that art for commercial purposes is “selling out”, than art licensing won’t be a good fit. I believe it is “cashing in” – turning my passion and creativity into a living so it is a great fit for me. Remember, there are so many things you can do with your art, be sure to find what will be a good fit for you before diving in.
