The Basics For Beginner’s Oil Painting

The most asked question by a beginner who is interested in oil painting is – what are the tips to help me get a good start? Generally, it does not really take much to get anybody started. With some basic supplies and guidelines, even the most inexperienced person can make a fairly good oil painting. Here are some tips to guide you along your first experience with oil paints.

First thing you need to do is get the oil painting supplies. Remember that you are only to buy the basics first and there is no point in spending a lot of money when you can get supplies of oil paints that are sold at low prices. Since you are a beginner, the main purpose of this step is to get you comfortable in using the basic brushes, canvas support and oil paints.

Pick the canvas to be used as your painting support even though there are a variety of other choices to choose from. A canvas must be prepared with primer or special coatings for you to be able to use oil paints application on it. Don’t worry about this as you can always purchase one that is already primed by visiting your local art store.

Pick a brand of paint that works for you as a beginner. Less expensive oil paints can offer you a good quality result as well. Some oil paint brands that you can test include, Daler Rowney and Grumbacher. Choose water miscible oil paints that are not hazardous to your health. This type of paint can be thinned easily using water which makes it practical for your beginner’s experience.

Get good quality brushes for your oil painting experience. There is no excuse in buying poor quality brushes as they can actually take the fun out of oil painting by their tendency to have stiff hairs that are prone to shed and get stuck in the oil paint. This can be a nuisance. Hogs hair brushes are the better alternative to softer synthetic ones as they are sturdier to handle. Invest in flats and filberts brushes as you will use them more often.

You can purchase oil painting mediums to help you dilute the oil paints for use. For a beginner, there is no need for you to be fussing over mediums. A simple medium that is used for diluting the oil paint is good enough. You can always start painting with a thinned down acrylic pain by toning your canvas a neutral color and setting up other hues of the same color. Leave it overnight to dry before you apply the oil paint.
