This is a question that is difficult to answer because most people want to paint something that interests them. It is a great start to be interested in subject material like landscape, portraits or pets. If you are keen on learning to paint seascapes or cars you are more likely to succeed than if you don’t know what you want to paint.

Why use paints and brushes when colored pencils or crayons?

Why use brushes when a palette knife could give you more interesting painting results?

Electronic Art – The Concept

Originated in west, Western Art dominates most parts of the world. It is of course one of the oldest in the history, dating back to approximately 3000 B.C., with a very clear line up of creative competence. Creative improvements and widening were witnessed in the form of carvings, paintings, standing stones, and other sculptures. Presently, Western Art is more a high-tech zone, involving the use of electronic media and equipment for the development of creative – a horizon known as Electronic Art. Owing to its immensely accurate, intricate, and creative output with tremendous efficiency, this technical genre is considered the strongest pillar of the art history.

The Details

Creatively, Electronic Art can be divided in the following elements:

o	Information

o	Media

o	Video

o	Digital

o	Interactive

o	Internet

o	Electronic Music

Of these, Media Art is the one involving creativity in the most fundamental sense such as painting. A mix of Conceptual and Systems Art, the designing part in Electronic Art is done with the help of electronic devices. High precision cameras capable of producing some effects help capture the shots, which are then digitally processed and improved on computer to get the desired artworks. Owing to global technology proliferation and quick & accurate turnaround, Electronic Art is fast gaining a lot of popularity. Digital paintings are given the perfect touch with the help of modeling software, some digital cards, and often robotics too. Digital colors in huge variation of shades well compensate for ‘messy to many’ water or oil colors.

The Pre-requisites & Scope

The only pre-requisite with Electronic Art is that you need to have the advanced digital skills. The artist needs to learn to use the graphics software to attain the required result. Once adept, the range of creativity can be encashed through general artistic exhibitions, architecture, civil engineering, movies & animations, digital outdoor advertising, stage designing, web designing, video games. The artists may project themselves through their websites or subscribing to various online art supporting organizations. Therefore, apart from satiating the creative senses, Electronic Art is one of the most rewarding careers.

The Artists

Roy Ascott (British – 1934), Maurice Benayoun (Algerian – 1957), Angie Bonino (Peru – 1974), Heiko Daxl (German – 1957), David Em (American – 1952), Ken Feingold (American – 1952), Ingeborg Fulepp (Croatian – 1952), Perry Hoberman (American – 1954), and Eduardo Kac (American – 1962), are some of the key Electronic Artists.

Annette Labedzki received her BFA at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. She has more than 25 years experience. She is the founder and developer of an online art gallery featuring original art from all over the world. Please visit the website at http://www.Labedzki-Art.com It is a great site for art collectors to buy original art.

People are interested in investing in canvas art for a number of reasons. However, regardless of what the reason might be, you should know about the different places that are present today that you can go to in order to acquire these. Once you are familiar with all the places, you might be in a better position to decide on your own as to whether or not this is the right place for you.

Listed below are common places that people frequent in order to buy these things. Perhaps from the list, you can decide where you should head to for picking out some quality artwork.

Art store / Museums

A good place that would most likely pop in the heads of people right away would probably have to be art stores or museums. After all, this is a place that is dedicated for the sale of canvas art. But, one disadvantage of such places would have to be the fact that you might end up spending quite a lot of money in these places.

Unless there is a sale going on, it is quite unlikely that you will be able to get your money’s worth from these places. Hence, you might end up spending quite a lot of time in these places, browsing for something more affordable!

Auctions

Another equally interesting place to go to would probably be to auctions. There are a ton of these that are held regularly and perhaps visiting some might help you get a clear perspective about what to look in for when picking out canvas art.

Again, prices are not guaranteed here. If some particular artwork is in high demand, you might end up coughing out a large amount of money in order to procure it. Unless you like the adrenaline rush of being in an auction and winning something, you would ideally want to avoid these.

Online stores

The best option of the lot would have to be to go online. Using the internet, it is possible that you are going to get a lot to pick from, and at a substantially lower price. Hence, you can get the exact kind of canvas art that you have set out for, without worrying about aspects like price and availability.

You can browse at your convenience and there is no one else besides you bidding for it. Hence, for this reason, you might want to put some effort and search for the right website in order to buy art for your home or office.

Hence, depending on what your profile is, you can take your pick from one of the above mentioned methods of acquiring canvas art. In most cases, it would make a lot of sense to go in for the online option as this is one of the most advantageous one out there to pick from. You stand to gain the most from this particular option, which is why it is worth going for. With the right website, you might really stand to gain a very good deal in the end.

A great website that you can go to for canvas art or even wall art is saveontapestries.com

Landscape Painting is a distinct genre of painting that captures nature in its natural form. The paintings are reflections of the skies, seas, rivers, sun, moon and greeneries on the canvas. One of the earliest and traditional painting forms, landscape paintings touch the heart of the modern art lovers with all their purity, naturalness and aestheticism. Visual documents of the panorama of nature the paintings with their timeless appeal have grown over the years as inspirations to the generations of artists. Indian selection of landscape paintings are the treasure trove of India. Watch them and get engrossed in the wilderness and unspoiled beauties of nature. Take a tour and enrich yourself with interesting information on landscape paintings.

The word landscape originates from the Dutch word “landschap” denoting areas of arable lands. Depicting natural sceneries in a medley of lines, colors and tones was the outcome of the natural inclinations of human beings to reflect what they mostly found around them. The early civilizations with less industrialization and urbanization presented nature in its complete bounties. Artists and poets admired them in their creations. Life was not at all complex and it was only nature and its diverse facets that formed the central theme of the paintings.

Landscape painting in its antiquated form can be observed in the pastoral sceneries of the Roman times. The paintings gained prominence with the emergence of Renaissance Art. Nature was romanticized and portrayed as philosophical and spiritual elements. Various religious and mythological events were represented via nature. Though the spiritual tones were absent in the Reformation times the paintings became more uniform and realistic in this era. The seventeenth and eighteenth century led to the flourish of the paintings with some master artists like Watteau, Gainsborough and Thoams Girtin. The breathtaking creations reached their acme in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Various movements of arts like abstract expressionism, impressionism and surrealism influenced the painting and brought in some new styles and techniques. Nature was observed scientifically and more importance was given to its hostile aspects. In the modern and postmodern landscapes nature is synchronized with human psychologies and complexities of life. The various facets of nature resemble the moods of human beings in manifolds.

Landscape paintings have several classifications. The skyscape paintings depict clouds, skies and weather conditions. Moon is aesthetically represented in moonscape paintings. The rivers and seas find visible expression in seascapes and riverscapes. The images of urban landscapes, industrialized cities, towns and streets are carved in cityscapes and hardscapes. The aerial landscapes offer an aerial view of the objects in the ground. Inscapes are visual images of the psychoanalytical mind as a three-dimensional space. Roberto Matta, Ajmes Gleeson and Jane Farnk are the specialists in inscape paintings. Various innovations and experiments with the landscape paintings are still going on. The paintings with all their connotations and aestheticisms are a connoisseur’s delight and a prized legacy of art.

Buying modern art (or indeed any category of art) will require some very careful consideration beforehand.
There are a number of questions to be asked on this point of buying art and I have set out here some pointers that I (as an Artist) think will be of interest, if not of value to you as a would-be purchaser.

Are you buying for yourself or, are you purchasing on behalf of somebody else, or is this to be a gift of art? Do you know if the proposed artwork will fit in with the decor of the interior? Will it blend in with the overall feel of the building and its surroundings?. Will the concept and colours harmonise or clash with the general ambiance of the room? Will the materials and/or frame used, lend themselves to the area in which the proposed work may reside?

Do you know if you, or the recipient will always like the drawing or painting? People sometimes buy an artwork on the spur of the moment and then find they do not know where to place it and then dislike it.

Where should you look for an original work? Today we are spoiled for choice as the internet has virtually brought the art world and the work of so many artists within our grasp at the click of a mouse. Galleries and exhibitions are still very popular venues for art buyers. Perhaps though you frequent a cafe or restaurant where local artists display their wares: or perhaps you could look on some of the internet selling sites?

And lastly, is the proposed purchase an original work of art or a copy. It is sometimes difficult to judge the provenance of a work. This is where you must ask and if it purports to be an original, request a written authentication by the artist.

Watercolor painting is a great hobby but it can be hard work at the outset. You should concentrate on the basic skills and techniques first before moving on to the more advanced ones. This article provides you with a step by step approach to these skills. Read it if you would like to be successful at painting.

1. Always start each painting with a thin layer of background paint. This is called using a “wash” and is essential in watercolor painting. You cover the entire canvas with one colour of paint. A variation of this technique is where you use slightly increasingly lighter shades of the same color as you work down the page. This is called a “graded wash” as is very effective.

2. You can create fantastic effects by using the “wet on wet” technique in watercolor painting. This is a technique in which layers of wet paint are added to previous layers of wet paint. It needs you to work fast because the art work has to be finished before the first layers have dried. It is highly effective, though.

3. You get a very different effect if you wait until a color you’ve put down has dried before you put down another colour. This is known as painting wet-on-dry. Any paint already put down on the paper must be dry before you paint another line if you want sharp edges to what you’re creating. The shape will stay exactly as you’d painted it if it is completely dry.

4. Watercolor painting requires that you sometimes leave areas of the canvas completely white. You need to decide which parts of the canvas that you intend to leave white and do not paint on them with a wash.

5. Only use a small number of colors at outset. Limit yourself to, say, three colors, to start off with. You can always go back and add further colors later on.

6. The center of the work is crucial because this is often the focal point. You will need to put something there that is interesting, eye catching and attractive. One tip is to place it ever so slightly away from the actual center. Find some way of highlighting it, too.

7. It is very important to use the full range of paint consistency when watercolor painting. The most intense color is obtained by using the paint as it comes straight from the tube. The lightest color is obtained by using paint very heavily diluted with water. Another way of lessening the strength of the paint is to blot it away with a paper towel whilst it is still wet.

8. You usually apply paints using brushes. However, watercolor painting can also be done by using many other implements, such as sprayers, scrapers, sponges and sticks. Some artists have combined watercolors with pencil drawing and other techniques such as chalk, ink, charcoal, crayon, engraving, monotype, collage and lithography.

9. You need to choose which paints to place upon your pallet. A really good approach is to use a selection of warm and cool colors from each primary. You could try something along the following lines:

* Cadmium red and quinacridone red
* Cadmium yellow and azo yellow
* Cerulean blue and phthalocyanine blue or Prussian blue.

10. Put a piece of paper to one side and use it only to experiment with colors. You can also use it to try out different levels of fluid on the brush. This helps a lot in bringing you controlled results.

11. Always plan your watercolor painting. Some artists might be successful at making it up as they go along but a new painter needs to be in control and plan ahead to create satisfactory results.

In this generation, oil portraits have a big part in the art industry. A lot of artists love to paint these oil portraits because of the elegance and class of the end result. It is believed that this artwork gives a true shape to the imagination of those expert artists and even to the beginners who want to practice their hidden skills in painting.

If you are one of those aspiring ones (to be an expert and professional painter), that want to have a direct manipulation of oil painting, you have to be equipped with knowledge about the medium. You should also know that that there are specific techniques and strategies from mixing of colors to applying of oil paints. Therefore, as what I had emphasized earlier, you have to know about those oil paints and how to use them in painting of oil portraits.

You should be aware that unlike other mediums, oil paints dry longer. That is why, a full patience for this artwork is basically required. To tell you, you have to wait from a minimum of one week to two weeks. Actually, if you are wise enough, this will give you a chance to evaluate and correct the painting for there might be some flaws and mistakes that need to be retouched.

It is also a fact that oil paint colors could mix well among the others. This property provides you an initiative to outline and balance the shades in a perfect manner. Thus, you have to take considerations to the subjects of oil portraits in the selection of your mixed oil paints. The appearance of oil portraits is more natural for oil painting have similarity to the translucency of a human skin. Plus, any subjects will look more realistic and classic because of a natural shine the oil paint has provided.

You have to know that oil portraits will never be that elegant and perfect if it is being dried under the process of evaporation. Unlike a watercolor paint, drying of oil portraits carries a chemical reaction, that is why, there is a requirement of longer time. Enough knowledge about this kind of artwork is very important with the matching creativity and careful applying of oil painting.

There are lots of varieties of oil paints available in the market Numerous stores and art shops are dealing different colors and oil paints with the range of different prices. Actually, the price for every oil painting is dependent on the quality of the product. Thus, there are some oil paints that are too thick and there are also some that come in a too thin texture. This is the time to ask yourself if what kind would be best suited to your dream oil paintings, and of course, with the balance to the range of your budget.

After the selection of the kind and quality of the paint, you have to decide the color of your choice. Since that oil paints could be mixed with one another, you can also select those primary colors. What I mean is that you can mix those primary colors to create another shade. Well, it still depends on your decision!

There are essential decisions to make before you start any painting. Planning in the early stages will help you avoid unwanted mistakes in your artwork.

Essential decisions

Is it necessary to plan a painting in careful detail before you start, or should you let it evolve as you go along? Planning a painting can be a help as you know exactly what you’re going to do, but it could also inhibit spontaneity. Letting a painting evolve as you work is very free and lets you be spontaneous, but also leaves you open to the possibility that the painting won’t go anywhere and you’ll end up with a mess. However, remember that one of the virtues of using opaque media (oil/acrylics) is that you can start again provided it has not been applied very thickly.

Ultimately the degree to which you plan out a painting depends on your personality, aptitude and confidence; some people find it essential and others a hindrance. But regardless of how detailed you like to plan, there are several decisions that have to be made before you to start to paint.

1. Decide On a Subject to Paint

Deciding on a subject is the logical first step as it influences the format of the support, the type of support used, and the technique you’re going to use to create the painting.

If you’ve only a vague idea of what to do with an appealing subject, such as a glorious landscape, sketching or doing small studies rather than a full painting will enable you to see whether the composition and selection of elements works well without wasting time or materials. A pleasing study can then be used as the basis or reference for a full-scale painting.

But if you find that doing a study makes you stiffen up when you come to do the large-scale painting because you’re focusing on replicating it, rather than it reminding you sufficiently of the original scene, consider doing only quick sketches to see if a composition works and taking reference photos to work from back in your studio. A digital camera is a useful tool for this as you can move the image around until you find the most pleasing image.

2. Decide on the Format of your Painting

Having decided on a subject, you need to decide what the best format for the support is; whether it should be landscape or portrait, or perhaps square. What shape of the canvas will best suit the subject matter? For example, a very long and thin canvas adds a sense of drama and wide-open spaces. If you are painting on board it is much easier to cut it any shape you want, i.e. round, hexagonal – whatever!

3. Decide on the Size of your Painting

The size of the painting should also be a conscious decision. A painting shouldn’t be a particular size simply because that’s the size of the sheet of paper you have. If you buy primed and stretched canvases, have several in various sizes to hand so you have a choice. Think about how the subject would look if it were painted small, or perhaps very large. Are you going to work life-size or oversized? For example, portraits which are oversized are very dramatic.

4. Decide On a Medium and Technique

If you only ever use one medium then you don’t have to decide which one you think is best for this particular subject. But what about the technique you’re going to use? For example, if you use acrylics, are you going to use them thickly or apply thin layers of colour. With watercolours, are you going to use retarders to slow down the drying time and are you going to use masking fluid to keep areas white? Taking the time to consider how you are going to execute your painting at the beginning will save time and frustration later.

5. Decide on the Type of Support

Are you going to paint on canvas, primed hardboard, or paper? Will it be a canvas with a fine weave, such as linen, or a coarse weave that will show through? Will it be a smooth, hot-pressed paper or a rougher watercolour paper? This is a decision that not only influences the texture of the final work, but also how you work, for example canvas will stand heavy impasto being reworked repeatedly.

Alternately, the technique you’re wishing to use will determine the best support.

If you are using oils, acrylics, or gouache, will you be using a ground (the starting colour does not have to be white), and what colour should it be? Try to imagine the subject is made up of layers. The ground colour is the first layer. How about using a complementary colour to the main colour in the picture? If you are using pastels, what colour paper will you use? And will you lay down an initial layer of complementary colours?

6. Decide on Colours

Are you going to use colour realistically or not? Are you going to use whatever colours you’ve got or select out a few to make up a palette just for that painting? Working with a limited range of colours can contribute to a sense of unity in a painting and great a sense of identity or unity between paintings.

Remember that colour is very important; it can add immensely to the mood of a painting. This is different from the intensity of colour you can portray based on the light levels of your image.

So there are many decisions to make before you even start to paint. If you are a beginner, don’t just sit there looking at a blank canvas; there is much you can do to get your creative juices flowing.

Did you know that you can use brushes with pastels? It's just one of the many pastel painting techniques there are out there and one that is really quite new. Here we look at four different things about painting with pastels that you may not know.
The Top 4 Pastel Painting Techniques is a post from: Art Views - Buying Selling, & Collecting Fine Art

There are so many painting techniques; it’s difficult to focus on which one to utilize and try when you’re beginning. Thus, I’ve created a list of the top 4 pastel painting techniques to get you started!

For most artists, pastels are a starting ground by which they learn to make and mix tones of colors for different shades. You can add colors and mix them to get the shades that you are looking for. As a result if you have already worked with pastels, this article may seem really simple, but continue reading it to get updated on what could be a basic course on using pastels.

Technique #1: Using brushes

Using brushes to get your pastel painting just right is just one of the most modern procedures that is used nowadays. You will be able to apply color and mix the pigment to get really pretty shades. Make sure that you use the best pastel pigments possible so that you can preserve the images for a longer time.

Brushes have been designed specifically for pastels and are used for procedures like applying, smudging color and blending. There are also brushes specific for clearing away unwanted color to brushes designed for glazing. These are a relatively modern addition to other pastel painting tools but they certainly are of benefit especially if you are already used to using brushes with other mediums. Just make sure that you get brushes that are specific to pastels.

Technique #2: Washes

Washes are just great for use in pastel techniques. They can be as easy as a straight wash of color over the entire paper to a more detailed tonal wash. Another name for washes is underpainting. This is where you get a background effect before you do the detail work of the image. This will require you to paint in the background and wait for it to dry before you actually do the main body of the work. You can do the wash technique with alcohol, which can fix the color into the background and dry faster, or you do the technique with water and watercolor paints that will take a longer time to dry. Both the techniques work well.

Technique #3: Feathering

Feathering techniques are great, but they require gaining a little practice. There are different ways of feathering used for different effects. One of these is the use of charcoal. Small, thin parallel lines drawn diagonally creates a subtle texture over the already layered area. Feathering is great for giving your painting a lift, for creating subtle shadows or for modifying the base color and casting a subtle change to it.

Technique #4: Glazing

Glazing is another technique where you have to learn scumbling to get the effect. You can start by laying down a few layers of pastel then, taking another color, dragging the pastel stick over it thus applying a thin translucent layer of color over the base color; this creates the effect of dulled light or brighter light, depending on the colors you have used and the surface that you have used the colors on.

Try each of these pastel painting techniques, and you’ll see what an amazing effect they have on your artwork. Remember, it’s always good to try something new or learn more about something old!
